Parenthood, drugs and alcohol
Children, too, suffer from their parents’ use of drugs or alcohol. Treatment for substance abuse aims to get the user to see the use of drugs or alcohol from the point of view of the child and learn living everyday life in a way that is good for the children, too.
In extreme situations, social services will need to intervene in the relationship of children and their parents. There are several means for such intervention, the most severe of which is taking the child into custody. Several methods are used with the aim of supporting the family.
Additional information on child protection services can be found on the Central Union for Child Welfare site (in several languages).
Information on the effects of parents’ substance abuse problems on children can be found on the AddictionLink site.
